PAY OUTLOOK IMPROVES FOR THE PUBLIC SECTOR - CIPD REPORT

Basic pay for public sector workers is expected to increase to be the same rate as private sector workers for the first time since early 2021 – both standing at 5%. This is according to the latest Labour Market Outlook from the CIPD and marks the biggest expected pay rise for public sector workers since the report’s time series began in 2012.

LARGEST EVER CASH INCREASE TO THE MINIMUM WAGE

The Government has announced its acceptance of the Low Pay Commission’s recommendations on minimum wage rates to apply from April 2024. The National Living Wage (NLW) will be equal to two-thirds of median hourly pay for those aged 21 and over. In addition, from April 2024 the NLW will be extended to 21 and 22 year olds.

COMPETITION FOR UK JOBS PEAKS AT HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE JAN '21

The latest job market data from CV-Library reveals that in August 2023 the number of applications per job jumped by over a third to 38.3% year on year. The job board analysed the thousands of job posts advertised on its site over the month, as well as the millions of job applications made to these roles, to work out the average application-to-job ratio in August, traditionally a quieter month in recruitment. The last time this ratio was higher was almost three years ago, in January 2021.

AI WORRYING UK MANAGERS

UK managers are increasingly worried about AI technologies, with leaders expressing concerns about security risks and the impact on jobs, a new survey from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has found. The survey comes as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed to make Britain the global hub for “safe” AI at London Tech Week and follows the PM’s announcement that the UK would host a global summit on safety in AI this autumn.

Responding to recent ONS labour market figures, Jonathan Boys, labour market economist for the CIPD commented “The fundamental dynamics of the post-pandemic labour market remain unchanged. Unemployment is low at 3.9% and the Bank of England expect it to rise only modestly in the coming years.
