Two-thirds of occupations predominantly held by women have a gender pay gap

New research by HR and payroll software provider Ciphr shows that two-thirds of UK jobs with a predominantly female workforce have gender pay gaps in favour of men. Ciphr’s gender pay gap study, based on the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), found that most (70%) female-dominated occupations, with workforces of over 50,000 full- and part-time employees, have a gender pay gap.

ONE IN FOUR EMPLOYEES LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB

Millions of people have been considering, and actively pursuing, a job switch this year, according to a new survey by HR software provider Ciphr. The poll of over 1,200 UK employees found that one in seven (15%) had started a new job in the last six months or so. While a further one in four (26%) have been ‘actively job hunting’, due to continuing cost-of-living pressures.

WORKPLACE CONFLICT PUTS STRAIN ON JOB QUALITY FOR ESTIMATED EIGHT MILLION UK WORKERS

People who experience conflict in the workplace have lower job satisfaction and are more likely to experience poorer mental and physical health, according to the CIPD Good Work Index 2024. The CIPD’s latest report showed a quarter (25%) of UK employees - an estimated eight million people - have experienced workplace conflict in the past year. Among those who reported at least one form of conflict, the most common forms were: being undermined or humiliated at work (48%), being shouted at or having a heated argument (35%), verbal abuse or insult (34%) or discriminatory behaviour (20%).

NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN INSECURE WORK REACHES RECORD 4.1 MILLION

The number of people in insecure work has reached a record high of 4.1 million, according to new TUC analysis. The analysis of official statistics shows the number of people in precarious employment – such as zero-hours-contracts, low-paid self-employment and casual/seasonal work – increased by nearly one million between 2011 and 2023. Over that period insecure work rose nearly three times faster than secure forms of employment. While the numbers in insecure work increased by 31%, those in secure employment increased by just 11%.

Commenting on Resolution Foundation research finding Britain is in the midst of the longest sustained rise in sickness-related inactivity since the 1990s, Shazia Ejaz, REC's Director of Campaigns and Research, said "One thing all parties are agreed on is the need for economic growth.
